Translating specialist biomedical research into accessible content without losing the science that matters.

Communication challenge

Peer-reviewed research is written for specialists. Technical terminology, assumed background, and dense structure put important findings out of reach of anyone outside the immediate field. The work had to open that up while keeping the scientific context and the limitations intact.

Audience

Non-specialist readers, interdisciplinary scientific audiences, and organisations communicating biomedical research beyond academia, including investors and healthcare organisations.

Approach

  1. Reframe the research around the questions a non-specialist actually asks: what problem are researchers trying to solve, why is it difficult, what are they investigating, and why does it matter to me?
  2. Translate terms like blood-brain barrier, nanoparticles, and nanotheranostics into plain language while keeping the context a reader needs to read the finding accurately.
  3. Work from my own background in biomedical research, so deciding what to simplify is a judgement about what the reader needs rather than a guess about what the science says.
