Using animation and visual metaphor to make biological systems easier to see, understand, and remember.

Communication challenge

Many biological processes are hard to communicate because nobody can watch them happen. Text can describe these systems accurately, but description alone does not give an audience an intuitive mental model of what is going on inside the body.

Audience

General audiences and learners interested in biology, biomedical science, and the human body.

Approach

  1. Use visual metaphor as the explanatory device. In The World Within Us, the body becomes a living city, with familiar structures standing in for systems that would otherwise stay abstract.
  2. Develop the science, script, pacing, and visuals together, so the visuals carry the explanation rather than decorating it afterwards.
  3. Explore AI animation as a production tool for original science explainers.

Deliverables

The World Within Us

An animated video reimagining the body's systems as a living city, making human biology tangible and memorable.

An original concept conceived, scripted, and produced independently. The city metaphor makes abstract biological systems intuitive, organs become districts, blood vessels become roads, immune cells become the city's defence force. Designed for science education and social media.
